Sholay - Biggest Hit of Bollywood

The biggest hit of Bollywood, and the largest gross earner in the Hindi film industry; Sholay has become much more than a movie now. It is an icon, which showcases the Hindi film industry in a nutshell. All the people associated with this movie: the actors, director, producer and the rest of the crew members, had become instant hits with their respective industries, after this movie.

Released on August 15, 1975, Sholay has earned more than $200 million till now, and had run for more than 5 years in one Mumbai theatre: Minerva. With 60 Golden Jubilees across the country, this is the only movie in the history of Indian cinema to celebrate Silver Jubilee in over 500 theaters all over the country, at the same time. Sholay is definitely much more than a movie. It was a real blockbuster.

BBC has declared this movie as the "Film of the Millennium" in the year 1999, and various other international media has hailed this movie to be a path setter for Hollywood movies as well.

This movie was shot with a lavish budget which was overspend by Rs 3,00,000 and over 3 years was consumed to shoot the whole movie. This was directed by Ramesh Sippy and the leading actors included Amitabh Bacchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Jaya Prada, Sanjeev Kumar and Amjad Khan. This was produced by G.P Sippy, who was the father of Ramesh Sippy. The movie was written by Salim-Javed and Anand Bakshi was the lyrist. RD Burman was the music director for this movie. The most of the movie was shot in Ramanagaram, a small village near Bangalore. After this movie, this place was renamed as Sippynagar, and is one of the most frequented tourist spots for the "Sholay Rocks" where the movie was shot. It is on the Bangalore-Mysore highway.

The plot of the movie revolves around two law-breakers : Jai and Veeru who come to rescue a village from the evil clutches of a dacoit Gabbar Singh who terrorizes the villagers and extort money from them. Hemamalini is the romantic interest of Dharmendra and Jaya Prada forms the couple with Amitabh Bacchan. The character which became the most famous was Gabbar Singh which was acted superbly by Amjad Khan. Gabber was in fat, a real life dacoit in the Chambal region of Gwalior and was thus inspired to play the reel life villain in the movie.

Several copies of this movie were re-made in later years, which failed miserably as compared to the real Sholay.
